Zelenskyy Looks to US Democrats for Increased Support Amid Struggles

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has conveyed optimism regarding the impact of recent Democratic gains in the United States midterm elections on support for Ukraine. This statement coincided with a broader appeal from European officials urging the new Congress to intensify pressure on Russia, as the conflict in Ukraine endures, marking Europe’s most devastating war since World War II.

Zelenskyy’s comments emerged on a Wednesday interview with the German broadcaster ZDF, shortly after American voters shifted the balance of power in Congress, giving control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives to the Democratic Party. He expressed gratitude for past Republican support but highlighted that Democrats articulate their backing for Ukraine more clearly.

“Democrats are vocal about assisting Ukraine and reinforcing the connection between the United States and Europe,” Zelenskyy stated. “This political shift brings with it hope for a better balance of power that could potentially result in increased support for Ukraine.”

The Ukrainian president noted that enhanced U.S. aid could significantly influence Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decisions. “If Congress advocates for substantial financial or military assistance, akin to what Europe is currently providing, such measures would positively impact Putin’s calculations,” he explained during the interview.

Since the controversial meeting between Zelenskyy and former President Donald Trump in February 2020, the Ukrainian leader has made efforts to mend their relationship. During that encounter, Trump accused Zelenskyy of being “ungrateful” for the aid provided by Washington, a remark that has lingered in their interactions.

In the backdrop of these developments, Trump has taken actions that appear favorable to Russia, including agreements that permit the importation of Russian diesel. Recently, he has also suspended sanctions previously imposed on Russia that Congress had overwhelmingly supported as part of legislative measures to aid Ukraine. Furthermore, Ukraine has voiced concerns regarding delays in the delivery of interceptor missile systems from the U.S.

Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, expressed her hopes that the new Congress would continue its support for Ukraine while exerting greater pressure on Russia. “The unity between Europe and the U.S. significantly enhances our strength, and I believe combined efforts can compel Moscow to conclude the ongoing war,” Kallas remarked.

Within Germany, the political landscape reflects a division in outlook regarding the implications of the Democratic victory for U.S. foreign policy. Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed skepticism about Trump altering his approach toward Ukraine, despite the Democratic Party's success. “Realistically, Trump has often circumvented Congress in the past. Why should that change now?” he stated during an event in Berlin, following the Republicans’ notable defeat.

Conversely, Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul adopted a more optimistic stance, believing the decisive Democratic victory might create new opportunities for initiating fresh diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving conflicts in Ukraine and Iran. Wadephul expressed hope that the Democratic leadership would foster renewed discussions regarding aid to Ukraine, which had been significantly curtailed during Trump’s administration.

However, there remains a level of skepticism across Europe about the pace of change in U.S. foreign policy, given Trump’s continued presidency for two more years. His administration has often clashed with European leaders, imposing tariffs that have disrupted economies and threatening to withdraw from NATO, alongside other controversial statements.

Austria’s Foreign Minister, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, emphasized the necessity for European security and prosperity to be self-reliant, independent of U.S. electoral outcomes. “Our security and prosperity must not be contingent on the votes cast in Kansas or Iowa,” she stated. “Thus, we are intensifying our defense capabilities and enhancing our competitive edge.”

In response to the shifting political landscape in the U.S., Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated that Russia hopes Trump would persist in his diplomatic endeavors, irrespective of the midterm election outcomes.

Democratic aides have indicated that assistance to Ukraine will be prioritized when the party assumes control of the congressional agenda in January. However, diplomatic movements appear to be accelerating. Steve Witkoff, Trump’s envoy, announced plans to convene Ukrainian and Russian representatives in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11 to deliberate on strategies for concluding the war and establishing security arrangements for Ukraine.

In a recent message, Zelenskyy underscored the urgency of progressing negotiations, stating, “The negotiations must proceed vigorously to conclude this war as swiftly as possible. Ukraine is prepared to undertake necessary measures.” He shared these sentiments on social media platform X, underscoring the imperative of advancing peace talks.

As the situation unfolds, the dynamics between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia will be closely monitored, particularly in light of the shifting political landscape in Washington and its potential ramifications for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
